What Time Does Stranger Things Season
September 17, 2025
Stranger Things fans are famous for every tiny clue the creators leave behind. Now a new theory about Season 5 is gaining traction and it could hint at a major scene in the show’s final season.
Filming for Stranger Things 5 wrapped up last year. During production, Ross Duffer frequently posted behind-the-scenes photos from the sets. Eagle-eyed fans believe some of these images contain clues about a pivotal moment in the upcoming season.
Lovers Lake first appeared in season 2 when Will recreated a map of the tunnels under Hawkins. It reemerged in Season 4 as the site of one of Vecna’s gates to the Upside Down. This was immediately dubbed “Watergate” by the fans. But looking back now, the lake’s heart shape and its name feel like deliberate choices by the Duffer Brothers.
Last year, Ross Duffer shared a photo from the set that showed Lovers Lake on a map. Other images showed Finn Wolfhard (Mike) and Noah Schnapp (Will) looking soaked, as though they’d just filmed a water scene. Even more intriguing, Episode 5 credits list a stunt diver and water safety personnel. Clearly, something significant is planned for Lovers Lake.
According to the fan theory, Season 5 will feature Mike Wheeler diving into the Lovers Lake to save Will Byers. It could also be the moment Will finally expresses his long-hinted feelings for Mike.
This wouldn’t just be a dramatic rescue; it would pay off years of foreshadowing.
Lovers Lake is shaped like a heart, and Mike is often described as “the heart” of the group. If one half of the “lovers” at Lovers Lake is Mike, the other half might not be Eleven at all but Will. This could be a major turning point for Byler (the Mike/Will pairing).
The theory gains even more weight from a small exchange in Season 4. After Steve’s leap into the lake, Eddie teased him about “Wheeler” diving in after him as an “unambiguous sign of true love.” Could this be foreshadowing Mike literally diving into Lovers Lake to save Will in Season 5?
Some fans go even further, speculating that it could lead to Mike and Will’s first on-screen embrace or even a kiss at Lovers Lake.
If that’s what the Duffer Brothers are planning, it would be a brilliant long-term set-up. We’ve already seen Stranger Things reward fans who pay attention to small details. This could be the most dramatic payoff yet, where Mike literally goes under the surface to rescue Will.
