Just like Stranger Things, Dark begins with the mysterious disappearance of a child. Later, its story spirals into time loops and multiple timelines, all tied to an apocalyptic nuclear disaster.

Could the Upside Down Be the Future of Hawkins?

According to a new theory, Dark could be canonically connected to Stranger Things. It suggests that Upside Down is not just an alternate universe; it’s actually a ruined, future version of Hawkins.

As per the theory, Hawkins might have been destroyed by a catastrophic event in the future, leaving behind the lifeless, toxic landscape we know as the Upside Down. It is possible that there was a nuclear war in the future that destroyed Hawkins.

This would explain why Upside Down had a lifeless environment and a toxic atmosphere. The creatures like the Mind Flayer and demogorgons could be the result of mutations over many years. Instead of being supernatural beings, they could be the results of decades of mutations after a man-made disaster.

If true, this would completely change the narrative of Stranger Things. The characters wouldn’t just be fighting supernatural monsters anymore; they’d be racing against time itself to prevent Hawkins’ destruction. That would make their journey eerily similar to Jonas’ struggle in Dark, where he fought to stop the meltdown of Winden’s nuclear power plant.

In Stranger Things 5, the main characters may try to figure out the event that triggered Hawkins’ eventual destruction.

There’s already a lot of speculation that Stranger Things 5 will feature time travel. Over the years, the show has sprinkled in subtle hints like clocks appearing in strange places, references to altered time and of course, Vecna’s obsession with rewriting the past. It would not be a total shock if the final season introduces a twist involving fractured timelines or alternate futures.

If time travel is confirmed, it would not only align with Dark’s themes but also raise the stakes significantly.

Plot Holes and Questions This Theory Can’t Answer

While this theory seems compelling, it’s not without its flaws. For one, many long-standing mysteries such as the origins of Dimension X, can’t be explained by an apocalyptic event alone.

It also does not explain why the Upside Down is frozen in 1983, and why it’s an exact copy of Hawkins. If it were simply a future version, why hasn’t time moved forward at all? Why is everything stuck on the night Will Byers disappeared?

With Season 5 being the final chapter and only eight episodes long, there’s limited time to explore such a complex twist.

Some fans believe the Upside Down might actually be a pocket version of Dimension X. For those unfamiliar, Dimension X is a mysterious realm and was the origin of the Mind Flayer. The prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow revealed that Henry Creel was taken to Dimension X when he was a child. Later in 1979, Eleven banished Vecna there—long before the events of Season 1 unfolded.

Another fascinating theory? Will Byers himself may have shaped the Upside Down. Since he was trapped there for an entire week, some fans believe his memories were imprinted onto the realm,b freezing it in the image of Hawkins as he remembered it. That’s why the Upside Down remains stuck on November 6, 1983, the exact night Will vanished.
